Great job, Steve Jobs. Apple has sold one million new iPhones over weekend and it would seem that the server problem on Friday did not hamper the spirit of people who want a piece of this new gadget. Its crazy. People camping out in the cold just to be the first. I heard some people in Hong Kong camped for 3 days. Hahaha. Imagine the toilet problem. Well, I won’t be getting one soon until they fix the copy/paste problem. I love my Nokia N95.

The original iPhone, introduced in late June 2007 in the United States only, sold about 270,000 units in its first two days. Sales topped one million by early September. The new device is sold in 21 countries.

“IPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend,” Apple’s chief executive, Steven P. Jobs, said in a statement.

Steven Hodges, president for the Northeast region for AT&T, Apple’s only carrier in the United States, would not disclose how many iPhones it had sold, but he said the iPhone would be AT&T’s key device for the holiday shopping season this year.

Still, iPhone sales pale compared with those of established mobile phone makers, like Nokia, which sells almost 10 million phones a week, or the Samsung Electronics Company or LG Electronics, which each ship more than 100 million a year.

In a bid to thwart the onslaught of new players like Google’s Android and the ever powerful Apple 3G iPhones, Nokia decides to shelve out $410 million to buy the rest of the 48 percent of Symbian that it does not own. Good thing from this is that it buys Nokia more time to check its strategies and it spins Symbian into an open source concept. Good job Nokia. That’s why I use your Nokia N95 right now….and I am still waiting for your haptic phones to roll out. There’s already a few Samsung haptic phones out. Hmmmm

Nokia may have just switched the balance of power from proprietary to open source mobile phone software by buying the remainder of the Symbian operating system software concern and spinning out the assets under an open source license.

This move, in which Nokia paid $410 million to buy the 48 percent of Symbian it didn’t already own and set up the Symbian Foundation as a new open source entity through which to offer the OS, is a survivalist’s calculation to thwart growing threats from proprietary and open source vendors alike.
