Sony Corporation (hereafter, Sony) has been working to standardize ‘CLEFIA,’ the block cipher algorithm it developed and presented as a state-of-the-art cryptography technique in 2007, and announced today that after final ISO/IEC*1 approval, ‘CLEFIA’ was adopted as one of the ISO/IEC 29192*2 International Standards in lightweight cryptography.

Information security technology to support safe and secure network access for customers has become indispensable in recent years in light of the increase in the wide range of network enabled devices. In particular, there is focus on lightweight cryptography technology suitable for ensuring the security of devices with low-power consumption requirements or those with limited hardware or memory. Under these circumstances ‘CLEFIA’ met the requirements of ISO/IEC 29192, as prescribed by ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 27*3 − the organization responsible for determining the International Standards for information security.

‘CLEFIA’ has the same interface as the US government’s Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). This block cipher has a block length of 128 bits, while key length can be selected from 128 bits, 192 bits or 256 bits. The most impressive feature of ‘CLEFIA’ is its realization of implementation efficiency while maintaining a high level of security. The development of ‘CLEFIA’ maintains superior security based on the latest block cipher design theory. Furthermore, ‘CLEFIA’ adopts the general Feistel structure*4, which is suited for implementation in constrained environments. Also, the ‘Diffusion Switching Mechanism’ (DSM) is employed to reduce processing operations whilst ensuring security. In addition, components for data processing and key scheduling part are shared. These improvements have made it possible to achieve efficient implementations in hardware and software, which had been difficult with conventional encryption technologies.

This excellent implementation efficiency enables ‘CLEFIA’ to demonstrate high performance in devices with limited resources or those with low-power consumption requirements. Accordingly, CLEFIA is suited for lightweight cryptographic applications as indicated in ISO/IEC 29192 in smartcards, RFID tags, sensor networks, medical devices and more, in addition to conventional applications.

The iPhone 4S continues its march across the globe with Apple launching the device in 21 more countries on Friday.

Though no official word has come from the Cupertino company regarding precisely which countries these are, MacRumors has taken the time to piece together various bits of information to come up with a definitive list: Bahrain, Brazil, Chile, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Morocco, Peru, the Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam.

As you might expect, prices for the popular smartphone vary enormously. At R$2599 (US$1405) for the 16GB model, Brazil appears to take the award for the most expensive iPhone 4S in the world – thanks to high import duties on such devices. The 64GB model will set you back a wallet-busting R$3415 ($1845).

The phone first launched on October 14 in seven countries – the US, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, and the UK. Since then it’s been gradually rolling out the device to more and more markets, with yesterday’s launch bringing it to consumers in around 60 countries in all.

At launch in October, the iPhone 4S reportedly flew off the shelves, selling somewhere in the region of four million units in its first 72 hours. And last month it emerged that US carriers were unable to keep up with demand for the new smartphone.

With the 4S now available in 21 more countries from today, including the two enormous markets of Brazil and Russia, Apple can confidently look forward to some healthy financial figures for the current quarter, which will of course include holiday season sales.

The bargain basement price of the Amazon Kindle Fire does not do justice to the wealth of high end hardware which is packed into its slender black frame. It may look like a BlackBerry Playbook and seem to encroach on the iPad 2 market, but at less than half the price Amazon`s first tablet computer is going to appeal to a different sort of buyer.

Firstly the hardware is well specified and intended to complement the software. There are no superfluous cameras, which on most tablets seem out of place anyway. Instead you get a seven inch touch screen display and a 1GHz dual core processor ticking away beneath the surface. The exterior lacks the overt style of the iPad 2, but then once your tablet is powered on you will be so engrossed in what is occurring onscreen that the aesthetic aspects will be less of an issue. 8Gb of internal storage is relatively small by the standard of tablets, but it will make much more sense once you look at the intentions of the software package Amazon provides.

The Kindle Fire is ostensibly based on Android 2.3, which tech fans will recognise as being an operating system from Google which is mostly intended to be viewed on the three to four inch screens of smartphones. There have been other Android 2.3 tablets like the HTC Flyer on the market, but most modern iterations opt to use version 3.0 which is tailored to the larger screens. However, Amazon`s programmers and designers have spent so much time tinkering with Android 2.3 that you will barely recognise it.

Amazon has built the homescreen to resemble a bookshelf, but a whole variety of media and apps can be accessed via a carousel which you can scroll through in order to get to the service you want to use. This is also integrated with Amazon`s various digital download outlets which let you buy and then access books, magazines, comics, movies and software without any hindrance on the Kindle Fire. Part of the reason that Amazon is pricing this tablet so low is that it expects to make up for the deficit over time as users splash out on downloads.

Cloud computing is another important asset in the Kindle Fire`s arsenal as you can store and retrieve data on Amazon`s servers for access while you are on the move, although with Wi-Fi connectivity and no 3G you will need to find a hotspot should you require web-based functionality. The Silk browser does a good job of compressing pages before they get to your device, speeding up loading times and lessening the burden on your broadband connection.

As you might expect you can access social networking sites via apps or the browser and things like typing out documents and sending emails all feel natural enough, which is thanks to the solid foundation of Android that lives under the skin of the Kindle Fire. It is not going to replace your waterproof MP3 player as a dedicated audio device, but it does do enough in most areas to make it a compelling choice for anyone who thinks the iPad 2 is out of their price range.
