Christy Swink, executive director of messaging for Cingular Wireless LLC, said text messaging has created a “huge impact on usage increases,” though she declined to provide information on what percentage of cell phone users send texts.

She did say that during the fifth season of TV’s “American Idol,” more than 64.5 million texts were sent through Cingular phones by music fans to vote for their favorite musician.

“Texting is fast, discreet and viral — once you get one, you want to respond,” Swink said. “It’s the way people stay in touch without having to make or take a call.”

Earls, the Union junior, said tapping out a message is a much faster way to pass along information without having to stop for a call, and it helps her to multitask.

“You can do almost anything and be texting at the same time,” she said. “I can read a book while I’m texting.”
