THE SMASH hit that is Jamster’s Crazy Frog has received a public scolding from Britain’s ASA (Advertising Standards Authority.
Owners of the pop chart topping cartoon character have been warned that their adverts don’t make clear the true cost of downloading the Frog as a mobile phone ringtone.

The ringtone is offered as part of a subscription service rather than being a one-off payment. There is, in fact, an industry standard way to stop any continuing phone payments.

All a subscriber needs to do is reply with the word ‘STOP’ to any shortcode service which is charging on an ongoing basis. Many youngsters don’t realise they will be charged around £5 per month for such subscription services.

Separately a British High Court judge refused to grant an injunction against the ASA’s judgement being made public brought by Jamster.

The ASA has also ruled the Crazy Frog adverts should now be run after nine PM. Does this mean the Frog’s genitals can now be shown, the INQ wonders? In the UK they are covered up in TV ads

Many mobile users in the UK who purchased the Crazy Frog ‘Axel F’ ringtone didn’t read the fine print.

By purchasing the popular ringtone on the Jamster web site, UK buyers were agreeing to subscribe to reverse-charge text messaging advertisements to be delivered to their mobile phones.

According to the BBC, those reverse-charge messages cost £3, the equivalent of about $5.25 USD each. Parents receiving sky-high bills from providers soon found the charges weren’t coming from them, but from Jamster.

Now, parents have turned to the premium rate watchdog, Icstis, with complaints about the charges. Icstis should issue a report in August on the reverse charges as well as further complaints that Jamster targeted an over-16 service at younger children.

Jamster said it does conform to existing ad guidelines, and informs customers that they are subscribing to an over-16 service. But Jamster’s telecom provider, mBlox, may still be hit with a fine of up to £100,000 or about $175,000 USD.

Kirstie’s mother was furious when her 12-year-old daughter came home from a school trip to Austria with her biggest ever mobile bill.

Jo Peacock, an IT manager from Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, confiscated the phone and rang Vodafone to find out why the bill was so high.

She discovered it was not Kirstie who was to blame, but Crazy Frog.

Mrs Peacock had let her daughter order Crazy Frog’s Axel F ringtone on the Jamster website, without realising she would then receive reverse-charge texts until further notice.

Ms Peacock told the BBC News website: “I was disgusted to find each text had cost £3. While Kirstie was in Austria I had been charged double as she had been roaming. To say I was livid was the understatement of the year.

Icstis, the premium rate watchdog, is due to report on Crazy Frog in August after similar complaints. It is also looking into claims the Crazy Frog ringtones, an over-16s service, were aimed at children.

Premium rate services for under-16s must not cost more than £3.

Axel F by Crazy Frog topped the UK singles chart in May, but the cartoon character’s reworking of the Beverly Hills Cop theme tune was an even bigger hit as a ringtone.
