We all have a need to feel that those we are intimate with – either as spouses or lovers – have at least a basic level of respect for us as human beings, and an obligation to return that feeling. I’d like to think that if I found I I couldn’t give someone even that, I’d cut them loose, and let them get on with their lives without the complication of having someone around who didn’t care about them. Even more important, if now I felt that I had someone in my life who didn’t really have any regard whatsoever for my well-being, I’d sever all contact and get out, however painful that might be. In the long term, I can see that it would be better for me, if not all round. I also believe in karma, what goes around, comes around.
