Paul Scrivens at 9Rules thinks it a bad idea for me to be joining multiple blogging networks. Sheesh. What ever. I’m about to go full time now and I’m happy to be where I am now. All I need now is 1 Blogging Network to give me a Good Offer.
Paul says:
Initially I can understand where Colbert might be coming from. Write on as many sites as possible and theoretically you are increasing your chances of making more cash. Spread those sites across a couple of networks so you can see which ones will really stick and pay off for you in the future. But look closer and you can see that this is probably the worst thing he can do for himself. I have my fair share of sites and it’s no easy task to pump out great content on a regular basis across all of them. Fortunately I am not trying to make money with all of them so I can be flexible with my posting schedule and what I write. However, I am assuming Colbert wants to make money and to do that he needs traffic. To get traffic in this competitive blogworld you need good content to draw people in. If you are required to write on 7 blogs with X number of posts daily the likelihood of any of those posts being great or even good is slim.
My 2 cents :
ok. I’m totally shocked to find my name here. I can’t believe its really on 9Rules. Thanks. Anyway, here’s my 2 cents. I know some probloggers have argued that writing too many posts a day will dilute the quality. I agree too. I’ve been trying to cut down on that too. Nonetheless, my contracts do not preclude me from joining other Blogging Networks and this works as an advantage for me. My contracts vary from network to network and the only way I can go full time is to secure as many contracts as possible for me to quit my full time job. Its been a hard 2 years for me and I’ve dedicated endless nights to just blogging my heart out. I’m on my way to being a full time problogger and its an envious position. My friends want to learn from me too. I am looking forward to now stay at home, blog, cook and take care of my future children. Isn’t that what life is all about? To be able to see my wife every day and earn a fairly decent amount of money is what I want. I’m close to that dream now. So its been a long road for me and I’m happy with it now. Now all I need is for 1 Blogging Network to make me a Good Offer and I might just quit being a “Multiple Network Blogger”.
June 14 Update :
I’ve written a long response to Easton’s post here
Hi to all, especially John and Duncan who’s giving me some good marks. I’ve been reading the great debate here and its very revealing. I know its kinda “fishy” to Paul that I blog for so many networks but it’s been rewarding for me and I think I have not hurt anybody.
I’ve had a personal blog before I even joined WeblogEmpire handling Thegadgetblog.com and it did not generate that much income either from Adsense or Affiliate Programs. So what’s a lowly paid System Engineer like me to do? Surf more, learn more and look for other oppurtunities, of course.
I’ve been priviliged to learn from the best in b5media.com, knowmoremedia.com and syntagmamedia.com. Now I hope to learn even more after joining BlogMedia.biz
The knowledge I’ve absorbed is definitely for my own consumption but who knows, down the road I can turn it into a profitable education training course like what Darren Rowse is doing in Six Figure Blogging and empower Bloggers around the World.
In the end, I will be blogging full time like my b5media bosses – Darren and Duncan and it’s the next step for the rest of my life. I’m ready to take a challenge. I don’t want to just earn a paltry “salary” anymore. Cost of living in Malaysia is increasing in leaps and bounds.
So having multiple streams of income now is my best bet to keep food on my table until I strike lottery or get a good deal from one of my Blogging Networks.
Till then, I’ll continue to do what I do best and hopefully one day, I’ll be a prominent Blogger in Asia just like you guys on the other side of the Ocean.
I’ll need to get myself some of them business cards too….
Thanks …..
Another June 14 Update :
The debate is growing larger. Duncan thinks Paul Scrivs is talking BS and stands up for b5media bloggers.
# duncan Says: June 13th, 2006 at 4:41 pm
Sorry Scrivs, I’ve bitten by tounge so far but I won’t stand quitely and listen to your BS. “We never bashed anyone” is crap, you personally singled out one of our bloggers in an attack peice and then had the hide to finish your post with “it’s not personal”. BS. You single someone out and have a go at what they are doing, it’s an attack, plain and simple.

John Wong says:
It’s easy to guess a person’s motivation behind by critics others, especially to judge those from a huge network of audience. It may be a good way to “attract” some traffics and clicks of penny by starting the fight; however it’s not rational to do that. I’m mostly appreciating than criticize people’s works, because I won’t be the “yellow” fox that “judge” the unreachable grapes is sour.
Mike Rundle says:
Hey Colbert, that’s fantastic that you’ll soon be doing this all full-time. I work at home right now and it’s definitely a nice place to be.
The only question I have is, do you feel as though you couldn’t be a fulltime problogger, blogging on your own site, that is, a site that you own by yourself? I guess if you add up the percentages that all your networks take from the top of your ad revenues, they might add up to a number you’d like to keep at some point. I know how difficult it is to start your own blog and grow it from scratch, so for some it’s not the best route to take. What are your thoughts?
Very best,
Mike
Melonie K. Murray (SmallBizMentor.com) says:
I agree, Colbert…I’m working on multiple contracts myself in order to keep doing this full time. (Just got my third one, on my second network.) I can see where, for some probloggers, multiple networks may not be the right answer. On the flip side, I believe participating with several networks will be the most efficient way to build up a good reader base and build the writer’s brand. Which, with writers, is their NAME.
Once someone has the readership, my personal belief is that those loyal to their “brand” will follow them to their own blog, just as those buyers who love a product will keep buying it even if they have to switch stores to get it. Where you have to go isn’t as important as getting what you want and enjoy!

Hey Mike….I’m always looking to start a very profitable blog owned by myself. I’d love that idea. I know I still work for other people when I’m with other Blogging Networks….I’m still building my brand right now until I find the best way to keep food on my table. Thanks for your thoughts. Who doesn’t want to be his own CEO in the end ?
Melonie – ditto.
