Steady Growth on Wireless Venture Capital

Some cool news today

A report released this week by visiongain says wireless venture capital has seen steady growth since 2000 and is poised to hit an all-time high this year.

In general, the report says, venture capital investments are trending downward. Wireless technology, however, is the exception.

During 2005, 152 wireless-related companies received $1.3 billion in funding, a 24-percent increase over 2004′s $1.1 billion. Wireless accounted for 7 percent of total venture capital investment last year, a figure visiongain predicts will rise in 2006 and beyond. The firm says most telecom investment today – about 60 percent – is based in wireless technologies such as networking, infrastructure, semiconductors, mobile computing, content and services.

Nortel Networks Corp. , one of the world’s biggest telecommunications equipment suppliers, said on Thursday it will unveil a $1.9 billion spending plan for research and development next week.

“We have teams working on where and how we’re going to be investing the $1.9 billion. We’ll be announcing it next week,” chief executive Mike Zafirovski told a conference in Whistler, British Columbia.
