I really got a shock when I read about the whole AOL – Weblogs buyout news. It’s incredible that Jason could be earning between 25 million to 30 million bucks with a 2 year old baby. That’s cool. I really love their gadgets blog – Engadget and read it everyday.
In total, the company has about 130 bloggers, with about 15 full time employees.
Weblogs is owned by Jason McCabe Calacanis.
From PaidContent :
Weblogs Inc, the blog media company founded by Jason Calacanis (pictured at We Media conference today) and Brian Alvey, is being bought by America Online, paidContent.org has learned from multiple sources. The deal is done and should be announced this week…(Updated: it might be announced tomorrow AM now.)
Among the other companies Weblogs Inc talked to included the usual suspects: News Corp, Yahoo and MSN…
From Problogger :
I’ve just been forwarded an email which was sent from Weblogs Inc Co-Founder Brian Alvey to Weblogs Inc’s bloggers. It was sent to me by WIN blogger who wants to remain nameless. I won’t publish it in full here as its a private email – but here are the main highlights which shed light on the deal between WIN and AOL.
Here’s my lowdown on the Five Reasons AOL wants to buy Weblogs :
1. Blogging is going really mainstream and you’re gonna see a lot of AOL ads. Slow loading of websites will mean users need more bandwidth.
2. AOL is going into video content and video podcasting will eat up more internet bandwidth. That means AOL can earn more from consumers.
3. AOL is going global and reaching for more advertising dollars. Think Euro and Sterling Pounds.
4. AOL wants to look hip and not just be an old tech company
5. AOL likes Engadget so much, they want to go into manufacturing and distribution of gadget items.
