Three million litres of clean water and 60kg of fish food a day — that’s what it will take to care for 5,000 fish in the Aquaria KLCC, here.
Kuala Lumpur’s first commercial aquarium, which will officially open on Saturday, has a built-up area of 5,600 square metres at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

The Aquaria KLCC is an interactive aquarium that focuses on education and entertainment, with a 90-metre acrylic tunnel, man-made coral reef and an “aqua theatre”.

Head curator Paul Hamilton uses the most basic thing to keep the water clean: sand, which naturally contains bacteria that consume fish waste.

The main tank contains 3,000 fish, including Cheryl, a three-metre sand tiger shark, and Bob, a 150kg grouper.

A walk through the tunnel enables visitors to experience the wonders of marine life without getting wet.

As visitors gape at moray eels with leopard-spotted skin, 700 litres of water is pumped hourly from the main tank into sand filters. From there, the water goes through protein-skimmers, which clear it of remnants of fats and proteins from the fish feed.

Divers occasionally share the water of the main tank with the fish, when they feed them at set times.

The 55mm thick tunnel walls are not glass but acrylic, which was “curved” in New Zealand.

The fish are fed with local squid and mackerel, with the addition of supplements. Divers feed the sharks using metal prongs. A three-metre shark eats 5kg of food a day.

Some 80,000kg of marine salt was added to the water to replicate the chemistry of sea water for the fish, and 10 per cent of the salt water is changed every month.

The aquarium complex is also a showcase for 150 land animals and has 20 interactive kiosks designed to educate visitors on aquatic life.
