Happy Merdeka Day. Today is the day my country Malaysia , gets its independance from the British (31 Aug 1957). We’v been having 48 years of great peace and prosperity. I pray that we will continue to enjoy this. Happy blogging and happy holiday even tho’ its only 1 day.
In January 1956, Tunku Abdul Rahman led a delegation comprising four members of The Alliance coalition and four Rulers’ representatives to London, to negotiate on Malaya’s independence. After three weeks of negotiations, the London Independence Agreement was signed on Feb 8, 1956. The British Government had agreed to give Malaya her independence on the August 31 of the following year.
When Tunku Abdul Rahman and his delegation returned from London, the happy news was announced at Padang Merdeka, Bandar Hilir Melaka, – the place “where it all began. The announcement was received by all with utmost joy.
The people’s objective and dreams were reached on the night of August 30, 1957 at the Padang Selangor Club (now Dataran Merdeka) where the Union Jack flag was lowered for the last time and the Malayan flag was proudly raised.
The following day a new independent nation was born with Tunku Abdul Rahman declaring the Malayan Independence at the Merdeka Stadium. The historical event was attended by thousands of citizens, the Malay Rulers, the Duke of Gloucester (representing the Queen) and other representatives from the British government. The day was a most important and glorious day for all Malayans (then) and Malaysians today, for after 446 long years of colonisation, our land finally became a sovereign independent nation.
The first and foremost achievement that every Malaysian should be proud of is our success in claiming our Independence. While many other nations had to endure wars, riots, revolutions and unrest before and after gaining independence, our struggle for Independence was concluded in a short series of genteel negotiations. The secret lies in the pure harmony among Malayans, despite the various ethnic groups, cultures and religions. This courageous unity has become a crucial element for the nation in making Independence a reality.
When Malaya gained Independence on August 31, 1957, the world community, and even a section of the Malayan community then were not convinced with Malaya’s ability to remain peaceful with a community structure that is of different religion, race and background.
This assumption was based on the fact that many states of the world at that time could not solve their ethnic problems. Critics believed that if the world could not solve this problem, then how could Malaya, a young and inexperienced nation, survive with three major races and dozens of other ethnic groups.
But our leaders and a large majority of people then had essentially thought otherwise. Rather than being obstacles to peace and Independence, the rich diversity was turned into strength that over the last five decades has become one of Malaysia’s unique qualities.
